While it's not quite an LMS, I'm excited about the new Social Media Classroom project. It's a pre-hacked version of Drupal that's geared towards extending the physical classroom with social networking and online collaborative elements. Because it's Drupal, it's definitely extensible, if not extremely portable. While I'm sure it's not going to be a panacea for extending classrooms to the net, I think it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Great post, I am an flash/flex developer and am in the business of making web apps. After a long break from academia, building up my work experience in the tech world, i decided to go get my Masters in Education Communication and Technology, and am loving it. I have been advocating as much as possible for people to use all the collaboration tools, and have made it known that i hate all LMS's in existence. From Sakai, to Blackboard, I'm not seeing any true innovation.

There is zero portability, and minimal extensibility. As you mentioned computers and applications, which in my opinion include LMS, are not solutions, rather they are extensions of the environment in which the student could learn. So having an LMS that is supposed to be a solution is rather confining. It should breath extensibility much like some other social media applications do. Hopefully that is where the trend is going, but I guess we will see.
